At its most basic, “The Babadook” centers on grief and trauma. Amelia has an unbearable time with the loss of her husband, and in addition to losing her husband, she cannot manage Samuel’s behavior. The Babadook could easily represent more widespread distress and trauma, used as the premise to obtain mental alleviation, preserving some trauma with no negative impact on their lives. The film can use the supernatural element (possibilities beyond ordinary human life) very effectively to show the trauma-movement mentality after grief and loss of mental health viewing of grief.
